Volunteering

The annual organization of the volunteer program of NMPZ is accepting every year more and more individuals wishing to participate in the work of the NMPZ. The ultimate objective of the program, beyond the apparent strengthening of the Management Agency staff during the difficult summer months, is the overall environmental public awareness and detailed information on the actions of the Management Agency of the NMPZ.

Volunteers learn the environmental parameters affecting nesting, the management measures adopted to protect the ecosystem as well as the problems encountered in each area, along with the measures the Management Agency has taken on in order to resolve them. Also, all volunteers of NMPZ take part in the scientific research of the NMPZ and thus, have the opportunity to attend  the nesting activity of the loggerhead sea turtle Caretta caretta and participate in nest excavations and scientific measuring. With their participation, volunteers obtain specialized knowledge and experience on an issue that has been in ther centre of ecological theorising over biodiversity for the past decades.

The assistance offered by volunteers in wardening the beaches is particularly important, since the obligations of  NMPZ in the busy summer period are increased, due to the arrival of tourists during the nesting period and thus, shortages of human resources are often created. Volunteers can also assume the role of ecoquides and can offer great help in the daily scientific studies carried out by the Management Agency. Finally, the vast majority of volunteers, who, at least for 2008 and 2009, are university students,  mostly biologists, are able to offer quality service of environmental tour to summer visitors.
