Wardening of the Nesting Beaches in 2003

The N.M.P.Z. Management Agency is responsible for the guarding of the loggerhead nesting beaches in Laganas Bay, and to ensure that visitors are properly informed about the existing protection measures. In May 2003, 23 wardens, 2 technicians workers and 3 supervisors were hired. Seasonal workers were trained from 7 to 15 May about themes such as the protection of the environment in Greece, the legal framework of the NMPZ, the different habitats and priority species encountered in the protected area, the fire protection / prevention plan and the public awareness techniques to be used. In accordance with the wardening action plan for the year 2003, the wardens are positioned in 8 different places along the nesting beaches located in the NMPZ’ area.

The guards tasks are:

  • To inform visitors about the protection measures
  • To report any illegal activities to the local authorities
  • To safe guard the surrounding area from fire
  • To keep the nesting beaches clean

In addition there is a close co-operation with the Port Police, in order to enforce the protection measures within the marine area of the Park.
